Lactation Services

Most babies are ready and eager to nurse within the first hour after birth. Pomerene Hospital encourages Kangaroo Care (skin-to-skin), to assist with breastfeeding and bonding, as much as possible during your hospital stay and the following weeks at home. The Maternity staff will assist with breastfeeding and offer education to help you and your infant.

Pomerene Hospital is highly committed to supporting you and your decision to breastfeed your infant.
During your stay you can expect:

  • Breastfeeding Support, our nurses are trained to assist you with your breastfeeding journey. Our nurses are available 24/7 to answer your questions and offer support and education during your stay. In addition, you have access to an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant during your stay.
  • Hospital-grade electric breast pumps can be accessed and used during your stay on the maternity unit. Staff will help set the pump up and explain how to use it.

Breastfeeding Support After Discharge:

  • After you leave the hospital, our staff is committed to continuing to support your breast feeding efforts. Staff are available to answer your questions by calling the maternity unit at 330-674-1584 Ext. 1290.
  • A monthly breastfeeding support/education group is held the 4th Tuesday of each month, Pomerene Best Start.

In an effort to improve the health and welfare of mothers and infants, Pomerene Hospital is initiating Best Start, a new program to give expectant families the best start possible. Attendees will receive encouragement and education on the benefits of breastfeeding and how to achieve success. Mothers-to-be and mothers who have already delivered can come to receive free expert assistance from a certified lactation consultant. These meetings are held on the fourth Tuesday of every month in the Hospital Auditorium from 1:00- 3:00 pm. To view our meetings schedule please click here
